How to convert a bank statement to Xero (OFX or CSV)
- Add your PDF statements. Drag one or more PDF bank or credit card statements into the converter, or click to choose them. Password-protected files ask for the password, which is used only on your device.
- Check the preview. Transactions appear in an editable table with dates, descriptions, money in, money out and balance. The balance check flags any row that does not add up, so you can fix it in a click.
- Download Xero (OFX or CSV). Export to Excel (.xlsx), CSV, OFX or JSON, or copy the table straight into Google Sheets. Nothing is uploaded at any point.
More about converting statements to Xero (OFX or CSV)
Why convert statements for Xero?
Xero bank feeds are convenient, but they often start only from the date the feed was connected, may be unavailable for some banks or card providers, and occasionally miss transactions. When you need earlier history or a missing period, the bank's PDF statement is often all you have. Converting it into an OFX or CSV file lets Xero import those lines as a statement so you can reconcile them like any other bank transaction.
Importing an OFX file into Xero
- Convert your PDF here and click OFX.
- In Xero, open the bank account you want to update and choose the option to import a statement.
- Select the OFX file and confirm. Xero reads the dates and amounts directly.
- Go to the reconcile screen and match or create transactions for the imported lines.
Menu names can vary slightly between Xero versions and regions, but the import statement option lives on the bank account itself.
Importing a CSV file into Xero
Choose CSV if you want to review the data first, add payee names or references, or remove lines. Export with the date format that matches your organisation's region, import the file on the bank account, and map the converter's columns: Date to the transaction date, Amount to the amount (negative for money out), and Description to the description or payee field. If you have a Reference column from cheque or reference numbers, map that too.
Catch problems before they reach reconciliation
The balance check in the converter adds each transaction to the previous balance and compares it with the balance printed on the statement. A full green tick means the import will reconcile to the bank's figures. If a row is highlighted, fix the amount in the preview first; it is far quicker than tracing a difference on Xero's reconciliation screen later.
Several accounts or months
Convert each account separately so every import goes to the right Xero bank account. For one account, you can add several months of statements at once and export a single file covering the whole period. Our Xero import guide covers duplicate detection and undoing an import in more detail.

Can I import a PDF bank statement into Xero?
Xero imports statement data files (such as OFX, QIF, QBO and CSV) rather than PDFs. Convert the PDF to OFX or CSV here, then use the import statement option on the Xero bank account.
Which file is easier for Xero, OFX or CSV?
OFX is the quickest because Xero reads dates and amounts without any mapping. CSV is useful when you want to review or edit the data in a spreadsheet first, and Xero lets you map columns on import.
What date format does Xero expect in a CSV?
Xero reads dates according to your organisation’s region settings. Export from the converter using the same order, for example DD/MM/YYYY for UK, Australian and New Zealand organisations.
Will importing create duplicate transactions?
It can if the same dates are already in Xero from a bank feed or earlier import. Import only the missing date range, and check the statement lines before reconciling.
