About Royal Bank of Scotland statements

Royal Bank of Scotland is part of NatWest Group, is headquartered in Edinburgh and serves personal and business customers mainly in Scotland.

RBS is part of NatWest Group, and its statement guide lists the abbreviations you will meet in descriptions, including BGC, D/D, S/O, POS, TFR, CHQ, ATM and INT. A PDF appears in Digital Banking as soon as a statement is issued, and RBS says its redesigned statements can be used as proof of identity, address or income. Statements reach back up to seven years.

Typical United Kingdom statement headings and where they go in your export:

    On the statementIn your export
    DateDate
    Payment typeReference
    DescriptionDescription
    Paid outDebit (and negative Amount)
    Paid inCredit (and positive Amount)
    Money outDebit (and negative Amount)

Also known as Royal Bank and RBS Bank.

How to download your RBS statement as a PDF

    1. Log in to Digital Banking in a web browser.
    2. Select 'Statements & transactions' (or 'Statements') from the menu.
    3. Choose the account, then the recent or historic statement you want.
    4. Download the PDF, then save or print it.

Digital Banking offers recent and historic statements going back up to 7 years for the account you choose.

Menu names can change between app and website versions.

RBS CSV and Excel downloads vs converting the PDF

Digital Banking's 'Search transactions' (under Statements) can export filtered results to Excel or PDF. For a complete statement with its running balance, or periods the app doesn't show, convert the PDF statement instead.

Converting the PDF statement is useful when you need periods outside that window, an account that is closed, or the exact figures printed on the official statement, including the running balance for reconciliation.

    Tips for converting RBS statements

    • Abbreviations such as D/D, S/O, BGC and POS go into the Reference column, so you can filter direct debits or card spending in Excel.
    • Digital Banking keeps seven years of statements, more than the app shows, so download older PDFs there and combine them into one OFX file for accounting software.

Importing RBS transactions into accounting software

For Xero, QuickBooks, Sage and FreeAgent, export CSV or OFX after checking the preview. Amounts are written as plain numbers without the £ sign, so they import cleanly as values. Step-by-step help: Xero, QuickBooks.
