About American Express statements
American Express is a card issuer and payment network headquartered in New York City, known for charge and credit cards such as the Platinum Card and the Gold Card.
American Express card statements start with a summary of the previous balance, payments and credits, new charges, fees, interest and the new balance. The detail pages list payments, credits and new charges separately, often grouped by card member, with a date, description and amount on each line. Payments and credits are shown as negative amounts, and foreign transactions may carry an extra line with the currency and rate.

- Open Statements & Activity for the card (labels can vary by region).
- Switch to the statements view and pick a billing period.
- Download the PDF statement.

Amex CSV and Excel downloads vs converting the PDF
Amex lets you view about two years of transactions and download them as PDF, Excel or CSV, and it has offered Quicken and QuickBooks downloads for recent activity and statements. A year-end summary can also be downloaded. Older periods need the statement PDFs.
Converting the PDF statement is useful when you need periods outside that window, an account that is closed, or the exact figures printed on the official statement, including the running balance for reconciliation.
Tips for converting Amex statements
- Amex statements are detected as card statements, so charges become money out and payments money in, even though the PDF prints payments as negative numbers.
- Foreign charges often add a line with the original currency and rate; the converter joins wrapped lines into the description, so confirm the amount column holds the dollar figure.
- When several card members share an account, charges are grouped by member; converting the full PDF puts everyone's charges into one table for reconciling.

Does Amex export to QuickBooks or Quicken?
American Express has offered downloads of recent activity and recent billing statements in Quicken and QuickBooks formats, and its year-end summary is available in those formats as well.
